I was honored to be a panelist at the first NEWS Symposium. I met so many bright and ambitious UNM graduates that have moved on to further their education at other master’s degree and PhD programs throughout the country. Those who have completed their education have good jobs elsewhere; however, they are eager to return to live and work in New Mexico. As our company grows I’m certainly going to reach out them.
It's been a few weeks since the symposium and I just wanted to tell you all again how much it exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure what to expect when I was invited a few months ago and I am SO glad I was able to make it.
Your hard work showed through how smoothly everything ran from interesting panels to motivating speakers. As I begin graduate school interviews, I am refreshed and excited about the very possible chance of someday going back to New Mexico. I am interviewing for immunology programs and when I begin graduate school, I plan on working on skills that would make me a competitive applicant for jobs in New Mexico (since it's not exactly life sciences oriented)..
I just wanted to share that this symposium left me inspired and excited for both my career and the state of New Mexico as a whole because I LOVE it there and am so happy to see people like you making an effort to improve my home state.
Let me start by saying that I am extremely grateful that I was provided the opportunity to attend the first NEWS Symposium. It really provided light for what was personally a dark and daunting situation, with respect to finding a job and starting my career. What a fantastic and educational experience! I attended the New Mexico Education Workforce in STEM Symposium at the University of New Mexico in December 2017. Dr. Werner Washburne and cohorts, organized an event to encourage former graduates from New Mexico universities and other STEM graduates to return back to the state with hopes to reduce the brain drain. Their team and collaborators organized on-site, immediate job interviews, and facilitated networking opportunities for graduates to meet prospective employers. I personally met and spoke with a panelist at the symposium, and was able to find the exact type of employment I had been seeking for over two years! I applaud Dr. Werner Washburne's efforts, and I extend my greatest hopes for the continuation of the program to benefit the intellectual and economic growth for the stability of New Mexico stakeholders. I would not have my dream job without her help, guidance and will to support STEM efforts in New Mexico!
